Workshop :: The Urge to Breathe – How to be more Comfortable and Confident with Wave Hold Downs

by Jeffa

Are scary wipeouts putting a wall up in your surf progression? Fear in the ocean is a totally normal and natural response, however it could be holding you back, making you feel stuck, frustrated or taking the enjoyment out of surfing.

If this sounds like you then we have the perfect workshop coming up run by British national record holding freediver Ruth Osborn.

Whether you’re aiming to paddle out on bigger days or simply want to feel more calm and confident in the ocean, through relaxation and breath work practices, combined with physiological understanding, this workshop will help you build confidence in the surf, find calm when you wipeout and help you to extend your breath hold.

Date:

Tuesday 17th June 2025

6:30-8:30pm

Location

Melancoose Retreat Space, Colan, Newquay, Cornwall

Price

£45

What to expect

Ruth will begin by guiding you through a breathing, relaxation and body awareness exercise to help you sink into your body and find connection and awareness of body and breath.

She will then open up the space to give you a chance to share your experiences of hold downs and being out in the surf so that she can understand and facilitate a positive workshop experience for you. It’s also a chance for us all to find a bit more connection with one another through shared experiences.

Next you’ll be learning more about the physiology of the breath, what is the urge to breath (that feeling when you’re under water and need to come up for air) and how we can stay under water longer. Gaining insight into how our bodies are responding when under water will help us to work with these sensations rather than against them and in turn help us be under water for longer.

Having learnt the more theoretical aspects we will then move onto doing some more practical exercises of breath holding and visualisations of wave hold downs and breathing.

This will be a dry workshop session so you can consolidate all the tips and techniques on land before moving out into the ocean and applying these techniques whilst you’re surfing.

There will be tea and snacks available throughout!
