EXPLORE 3.0: Galicia, The Longboard Edition

by Jeffa

Sistas Explore is our pop-up surf trip series with adventure at its heart – and this May we’re heading back to Galicia for a special longboard-focused escape.

Over the past two years we’ve fallen hard for this wild corner of Spain, road-tripping between empty beaches and scoring dreamy 2–3ft peelers each time. We’ve found a handful of spots here that feel tailor-made for longboarding, and after experiencing the magic ourselves, creating a dedicated logging trip feels like the natural next step.

So for 2026, we’re returning twice: September remains our flagship Explore Galicia adventure, while May is all about our lovely loggers – an opportunity to dial in your footwork, refine your style, and enjoy waves made for logging.

GALICIA, NORTHERN SPAIN

Dreaming of uncrowded beach breaks, smooth spring swells and the nostalgic feel of old-school surf travel? So are we.

Join us in May as we head to the rural heartland of the most westerly tip of continental Europe. Springtime in Galicia is something special: longer days, green landscapes in full bloom, fewer crowds and consistent swell lines that are perfect for longboarding.

This region stole our hearts with its raw coastline, slower pace of life and wave variety. Sheltered bays, peeling sandbanks and mellow take-offs make Galicia an absolute dream for longboarders – and in May, conditions are often glassy and playful, ideal for trimming, cross-stepping and nose-time.

Expect all the usual Surf Sistas magic: hand-picked comfortable accommodation, hearty Galician food, supportive and highly experienced female coaches (with a max 3:1 ratio), and a brilliant crew of women to surf and explore with.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Our Galicia Longboard Trip is the perfect antidote to busy, modern life. You’ll arrive in a remote village nestled among green valleys, forests and rugged cliffs along the Galician coast. This is slow-living in Northern Spain. No cities, no queues, no distractions – just birdsong, ocean energy, friendly farming neighbours and a single local restaurant within walking distance. It’s beautifully off the beaten track.

Expect all the same vibes and inclusions as our September Galicia Road Trip – just with a longboard focus! We’ll be guiding you through five days of longboard-focused surf coaching, with one to two surf sessions daily, depending on conditions, guided by Surf Sistas specialist longboard coaches alongside a knowledgeable local guide. Sessions are designed to help you refine flow, style and wave reading, while progressing at your own pace.

Throughout the week, we’ll include relevant surf theory sessions alongside photo and video analysis – an invaluable tool for developing technique and confidence, especially in longboarding where subtle movement makes all the difference.

To keep bodies feeling open and energised, three yoga sessions are included throughout the week to support recovery, mobility and balance.

Mid-week we’ll step away from the surf for an afternoon to explore the dramatic Galician coastline – rocky peninsulas, coastal paths and wild Atlantic views. The Romans believed this was the end of the world, and it’s easy to see why.

Between sessions, enjoy time by the heated outdoor pool, curl up with a book, or wander off to find a quiet sunset spot.

SURFING

Our home beach is just a short walk away – a sweeping 1.5km stretch of sand framed by cliffs and Galician villages. Its curved shape provides shelter from northerly winds and offers a range of wave sizes along the beach, making it consistently surfable and ideal for longboarding.

May is a fantastic time of year here: spring swells combine with lighter winds and fewer surfers, creating soft shoulders, open faces and wave shapes that reward patience and flow.

When conditions call for it, we’ll explore nearby breaks within an hour drive. With multiple coaches and vehicles, we’ll ensure everyone is surfing waves suited to their level and longboard goals. Road-trip vibes included!

ACCOMMODATION

We’ll be staying in renovated, traditional stone cottages within a small Galician village.

Outside, there are open lawns and peaceful chill-out areas where you can unwind to the sound of birds, the local cow herd and the distant sea. The beach is a 10-minute walk – and yes, there’s an indoor heated pool.

Accommodation is shared across two cottages with a mix of comfortable double and twin rooms. Interiors are simple, warm and true to the region’s traditional style.

The rooms available are:

  • Twin share rooms with shared bathroom. These are 2 connected twin rooms that share a bathroom, they are located in the small house (adjacent to the main house). You have to walk through one to get to the other so have the feel of a divided spacious quad room. A great pick for solo travellers, a group of 4 or pairs.
  • Private occupancy room with double bed and ensuite private bathroom
  • Private occupancy room with double bed and shared bathroom
  • Twin share room with ensuite bathroom (this room has two sets of bunk beds but is made available as a twin room for 2 persons)

EATING

Our hosts are known for hearty, nourishing home-style cooking, using much of their own home-grown produce.

Enjoy buffet breakfasts and generous lunches and dinners showcasing authentic Galician cuisine – typically a first course, main and dessert – all adaptable to dietary needs. Celia’s desserts are, quite frankly, legendary.
