The Surf Sistas Heatwave Survival Kit

by Surf Sistas

The forecast says sunshine. The beach car parks are full. The queue at the ice cream van is twenty people deep.

Whether you’re surfing, swimming, paddle boarding or simply trying to survive another day of carrying a wetsuit around in 28°C heat, here’s what’s currently earning a place in our heatwave survival kit.

We’ve gathered together some cheeky discounts below to help you stay happy in the heatwave .. enjoy!

A Surf Hat that Actually Stays On

If you’re spending hours in the water, a baseball cap isn’t going to cut it.

We’ve been reaching for our Ocean & Earth surf hats, which are designed specifically for surfing, with secure straps, plenty of coverage and enough protection to stop your face, scalp and neck looking like a lobster by lunchtime.

Perfect for longboard sessions, surf coaching sessions and anyone whose scalp burns within approximately six minutes of leaving the house. They come in cute colours so you could legit leave the house wearing it too!

Sunscreen That Survives Long Surf Sessions

We tested SWOX sunscreen throughout our recent Galicia trips and it quickly became a team favourite.

It stays put during long sessions, doesn’t sting your eyes halfway through a paddle out and offers serious protection when you’re spending all day outside.

Because nobody wants to return from a surf session looking like they’ve been lightly grilled.

Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

Hydration sounds obvious until you’ve had three coffees, one Cornish pasty and approximately two mouthfuls of water all day.

Our Super Sparrow water bottles have been keeping us on track and we’ve had many less heatwave headaches as a result! For bonus points we’ve been filling them with ice before leaving the house.

Polarised Sunglasses to Protect from Glare & Eye Fatigue

A good pair of sunglasses is non-negotiable for us, our eyes take a battering from salt-water and sunlight.

We’ve been wearing Union of Surf sunglasses all day every day for a couple of years now! They are an eco choice and we love the cute range of styles they offer – win/win!

Polarised lenses are a non-negotiable when you are stood on the beach all day filming other people’s waves and we’re loving this leopard pair!

Thanks Union of Surf for protecting our eyeballs, we love your sunnies!

Swim Fins For When The Waves Disappear

When the waves go teeny tiny, we don’t necessarily give up on getting in the sea.

We’ve had the bellyboards and DORSAL swim fins out this summer, making the most of the little waves and remembering that ankle-high surf can actually be a lot of fun when you change what you’re riding.

Swim fins are also brilliant for bodysurfing, sea swims and generally messing around in the water – and small enough to keep in the car ready for those unexpectedly flat days.

Finding Every Conceivable Excuse To Get In The Sea

The sea is the most effective heatwave solution we’ve got around here (non UK readers, AC just isn’t a thing here and the shops and internet ran out of fans in June!)

Whether it’s a dawn surf, a solo swim or simply floating around with friends; some cooler water and good company solves most problems.

One things for sure we’re staying in the water until we’re wrinkly!

10. A Healthy Respect For Ice Cream

Technically not an essential.

Emotionally, absolutely essential.

This vegan mint choc chip beauty was scooped by Swim Sistas Swim coach Hannah who doubles as an ice cream queen with her retro ice cream van Pink Flamingo, aka Rita

We hope we’ve helped cool you off! The beauty of Cornwall is that we usually have some kind of sea breeze going on so its generally more comfortable here than inland during a heatwave. Come down and surf with us we still have plenty of fun events to sign up before this Summer is over!
